Dubbed movies should be banned! · 2006-04-10 21:27 by Damian

Quick check: did the last movie you saw have the dialog in its original language? Or was it…careful, here comes the D-word…DUBBED?

No offense to all of you out there, but Japan sucks at this! France, Germany, Italy and scores of other countries also suck at this!

Whew, got that out of my system. What am I talking about? Learning other languages of course. If we forego the fact that watching a dubbed movie/drama/whatever is tiring because of the lack of lipsync, it’s astounding why grownup people would want to watch world-famous actors having their voices replaced by god-knows-who.

As for the learning-part, I can honestly tell you, that if the only time you hear a foreign language is in a classroom, you will never get to a very advanced level. You will always have the accent that gives you away as a foreigner the second you open your mouth.

Take English for example, people from areas like Scandinavia and Benelux usually speak English with far less accent than the bigger European countries such as France, Germany or Italy. Why is that? My very personal theory is that is a lot due to…here it comes again…dubbing… [Ew, wipes mouth with soap]. Switch on a TV in those countries, and you will hear nothing other than the native language unless you actively look for something else.

Japan does the same thing, and in a country that is already more isolated from outside influences that most, that also means that implications are worse. All kids in Japan learn English for a long time, yet preciously few can use it for anything meaningful.

Enough rambling, at least most of you have a choice. When you see a movie, go to the afternoon screening that shows it with original language and subtitles instead of the other worthless showings. Tell you TV broadcasters to stop destroying the movies they broadcast. Or, if you’re watching a digital transmission, chances are that there are several soundtracks, including the original one. Don’t even think of watching a DVD in anything else than the original language.
