This is the main menu, the options are to go directly to the map, go to the Guidebook (purchased extra content), go to your bookmarked spots, or change display options. Let’s go directly to the map.

Here we are, centered on Tokyo’s main railway station, at zoom level 4. The same place on Google Maps can be seen here.

At zoom level 2 more icons for nearby businesses appear. It seems like we can grab a quick burger before heading out sightseeing…

This is as detailed as it will get. If you’re dying for that 100 yen cheeseburger go ahead… :) Google Maps will get us this much detail. Of course, there we also get the option for a nice satellite view of the same place.

For reference, this is as far out as we can zoom.

Summary

Sony makes a nice attempt at moving the PSP beyond games, and this is an application that really utilizes the storage capacity of UMD. I’ll definitely be bringing my PSP along next time I go off wandering through an unfamiliar city, it’s a lot more portable than most maps.

However, if we get the promised GPS receiver along with software support for it, things will be on a different level. Until then you may want to take it easy.

The add-ons are a nice touch, though I’d rather have paid a little more to begin with to have them included on the UMD instead.
