PSP Firmware 2.70 - screenshots · 2006-04-29 00:03 by Damian, 1 comment(s)

The new features

The most obvious reason to update to firmware 2.70 would be support for Macromedia Flash version 6. Let’s have a quick look at it.

Like the WMA playback feature, the Flash support has to be enabled using your Internet connection first.

Click to start upgrade.

And you’re done, screen with boring disclaimers skipped.

To check it out, first a quick browse to Macromedia’s own homepage. Looks good, all of the stuff actually shows up, though the site notes that we probably don’t have full support. That quickly becomes obvious, on the PSP the flash parts are all static, not so when viewed in a standard browser.

Next test, we took a look at Macromedia’s showcase page. Not surprisingly, most examples here make use of all the latest and greatest features, so pretty much none of them are viewable on the PSP. Too bad…

How about games? We took a quick look at www.flash-games.net and, feeling ambitious, loaded up Flash Sonic, a 1400 kb download. Somewhat surprising, it actually started up, with full sound.

Note: I didn’t accidentally crop the photo too much, everything just doesn’t fit on the PSP screen without scrolling.

Well, the good feeling of having the game actually start doesn’t last very long. The game runs at about 1-2 fps, and since it relies on a keyboard there is no way of controlling it. Summing it up, games are slow, and if you need to do anything other than clicking to control them – forget it. I imagine there are a bunch of puzzle games out there that will be perfectly useable though.

RSS support

The second most significant feature would be the updated RSS support. The ability to add RSS feeds and have the PSP play audio entries from them is nothing new, but in 2.70 there is a big improvement. You can now select a feed and quickly download and save audio entries to your Memory Stick for later offline listening. There is a new configuration setting for this where you can select how many entries should be downloaded by the Save Multiple command. The possible choices are: Latest item, Last 2, 5 or 10 items, or finally All items. After the download, the files show up in a folder named after the feed they came from.

This is one very neat feature, it makes the RSS support a lot more useful. Screenshots coming up during the weekend.

Digg it!
