World Cup Soccer on your PSP · 2006-06-04 18:14 by Damian

We’ve talked before about Sony’s Portable TV service that has been up and running in Japan for more than six months by now. So what’s up now? World Cup football/soccer of course! Digests of all 64 games will be available for download – in Japan…

Since the 2006 FIFA World Cup will be underway fairly soon, and Japan is participating, interesting is already mounting over here. Today I spotted a pamphlet in the local electronics’ superstore trumpeting the availability of highlights from all 64 games on P-TV.

It is unclear how long those clips will be, or how soon after the actual game they will be made available. Pricing is listed as JPY 105 ($0.94) for one game, or JPY 525 ($4.70) for a one-month pack. Is is not mentioned how long you’ll be able to watch the clips after they are downloaded, a guess would be one week at most. The details on the one-month pack are also vague, if you can indeed watch all games for JPY 525 it’s actually not bad. Have a look for yourselves here.

We’ll bring you updates on this as soon as the World Cup gets underway. History has shown that sports events, and the soccer World Cup in particular, is a powerful force in getting people to buy new TV’s, set top boxes and pay-TV subscriptions. Perhaps this will work in Sony’s favor too.
