Being in a different country · 2006-04-05 17:01 by Damian

Think about it – what’s the longest period you have ever been away from your own country? A two week vacation trip to a sunny place? Maybe a bunch of work-related trip to different countries that let you experience the airport, a hotel room and the nearest place to eat?

If that is all you’re missing out on things. For starters, you’re missing of on a lot of problems. There are a lot of things we all take for granted about daily life, such as what kind of food is available in the supermarket, how people behave when you talk to them, or even the basic ability to read things like newspapers, important forms or street signs…

Scary? Self-torture? Naah – I love it!

Most people I know, including myself, don’t really like to look like a fool. However, in a new country, that will happen to you on a fairly regular basis. In addition to that being a rather humbling experience that would do a lot of people good to have, you’ll also emerge with a much better understanding for other cultures.

I’ll be posting more examples of the interesting things you can see if you go to Japan. Meanwhile, take some time to think about it. If you can, go and see what’s out there!
